Day 06 - After breakfast we drive to Bardia National Park. The Bardia National Park, located in Nepal’s southwestern flatlands, is coming up as a rival to Chitwan as a destination for safari lovers. With its convenient connection, wealth of wildlife and range of resort accommodation, it is bringing in jungle adventurers by the elephant-load.
Bardia offers comparable opportunities as Chitwan. But it has a "wilder feel" provided by its remoteness and relatively recent entry into tourism. The activities available here are safari on elephant-back to view animals in the wild, nature walks and jeep drives through the forest and canoe rides on the rivers.Game viewing activities in the jungle are fully-conducted excursions with trained naturalists and guides. There is a selection of comfortable lodges inside and close to the national park. They provide comprehensive packages including transfers, jungle tours, accommodation and food. All you have to do is arrive at the pick-up point.A jungle safari in the Royal Bardia National Park is an experience to remember.

The park encompasses 968 sq km of thick forests and tall grasslands which are the romping ground of wild elephants, the one-horned rhino and several kinds of deer. The Bengal tiger also lurks in the jungles here, while the rivers are home to the marsh mugger and gharial crocodiles. One of the key attractions of Bardia is the Gangetic dolphin.
Adjoining the park are cultivated fields and villages of the Tharu people. Small raised platforms known as machans dot the fields. People sleep on them at night to watch out for wild animals charging out of the forest to raid the crops. The Tharus are native to the region and possess a colorful culture. An interesting sidetrip to your jungle safari is visiting a Tharu village by buffalo cart or on foot. You can also visit the Tharu Cultural Museum at Thakurdwara.
Thakurdwara is the headquarters of the national park. There is a crocodile farm here where the reptiles are hatched and raised to be released into the park’s rivers. The Royal Bardia National Park started out in a small area in 1976 as the Royal Karnali Wildlife Reserve. It was extended to its present size in 1984, and became a national park in 1988. It is the largest national park in the Terai plains.
